Many residents have lobbied for commercial power, while others say homeowners bought knowing they were off the grid. Barroso estimates the cost to electrify the island will be $625,000, paid for by No Name homeowners.

Keys Energy may have issues securing aerial easements to install power lines over county-owned property on No Name Key. County Attorney Suzanne Hutton told the Keynoter it's inconsistent with the land development regulations to grant easements over property donated for conservation purposes.

In addition, county code presents potential problems with issuing permits to connect to utilities for properties inside the Coastal Barrier Resource System. The CBRS was created in 1982 and protects undeveloped coastal barriers.
