We are nearing the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the war has … not gone well for Vladimir Putin. Almost a year later, his forces have been stalled or forced back on all fronts. This leaves the question: what would happen if Ukraine wins the war?
If Ukraine wins and forces Russia out of its territory, the balance of power in Eastern Europe will change significantly. Ukraine’s accession to the EU and NATO would become far likelier, and Russia could become cut off from Crimea, and with it, the Black and Mediterranean Seas.
Meanwhile, a weakened, humiliated Russia would not be guaranteed to become a good-faith member of the international community even with Putin out of power. It is likelier to remain an isolated, revanchist country, with China eager to gain more influence there, and with it being more willing to resort to its one and only remaining tool for leverage – nuclear threats.
