We have whitetail deer just about everyday. They will go into rut when they shed their velvet and will peak under the second full moon after the autumnal equinox which tends to fall between November 20 and December 20th. Some years we have a late rut and it may go into January. The rut (from the Latin rugire, meaning "to roar") is the mating season of deer, sheep, camels, goats, pronghorns, bison, giraffes and antelopes, and extends to others such as skunks and elephants. On our stream we see deer and have seen a skunk once or twice. You may see the whitetail bucks hooking the trees with his antlers. This is called signposting or signpost rubs. These rubs are visual signs and specific spots where the buck deposits scent in the form of primer pheromones. These pheromones indicate the buck's social status and acts to stimulate does and warn off younger bucks. Deer have highly sensitive noses, and so they make rubs and scrapes to communicate by scent. These “signpost” communications help deer mark their territory, demonstrate their presence, and show they're ready to breed.
