I took a day trip to Ngong Ping and Tai O to see the Big Buddha and Tai O stilt houses. First I took the Ngong Ping cable cars up the mountain then went to see the Big Buddha. From there, I could enjoy Hong Kong's natural beauty as well as views of Po Lin Monastery from above. After that, it's a relatively swift bus ride to Tai O, a small fishing village at the edge of Hong Kong's Lantau Island. There, I saw traditional stilt houses, enjoyed art around the village, walked among temples and traditional buildings, and ate Tai O donuts.
