Is poverty truly about lack of resources or lack of access?
Aishah dismantles the long-held belief that Northern Nigeria is inherently poor. She argues that the real crisis is systemic disconnection: from infrastructure, technology, opportunity, and investment. This talk reframes the narrative and proposes strategic reconnection as the pathway to prosperity. Aishah N. Ahmad, CFA, OFR, is a global finance and policy leader whose work sits at the intersection of financial systems, gender equity, and societal transformation. With nearly 30 years of experience, she curates the Bridgforte Dialogues at UNGA, is Chair of the Graça Machel Trust Expert Leaders’ Group (ELG), and holds the traditional title of Soniya Asusu Nupe—a stewardship role committed to enterprise, community prosperity, and cultural legacy. She was Deputy Governor for Financial System Stability at the Central Bank of Nigeria (2018–2023), where she oversaw landmark reforms in digital finance, financial inclusion, and banking regulation in Africa’s largest economy. Her tenure strengthened Nigeria’s position as a continental leader in financial innovation and saw significant progress in women’s representation in senior banking roles. Prior to her public service, she held senior leadership roles at Stanbic IBTC, part of Standard Bank Group, overseeing private wealth management This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
