Why is the RBI shifting away from traditional cotton-based paper notes? According to the latest financial records, the cost of printing currency skyrocketed to ₹6,372.8 crore. On top of that, a massive 23.8 billion soiled and torn notes had to be destroyed by the central bank last year alone. Polymer notes are lightweight, fully foldable, water-resistant, and last 3 to 4 times longer than paper currency. While a similar trial faced issues in 2012 because older ATMs couldn't handle the material, the RBI has confirmed that technology is now fully ready.
