1. Read the Unit–2 of the text ‘Father’s Help’ written by R. K. Narayan thoroughly and answer the following questions:
(A) Answer the questions: 2×4=8
(i) What did Swami’s father do after hearing that Samuel was an angry man?
Ans: On hearing that Samuel was an angry man, Swami’s father told Swami why did he not tell about it to his headmaster? Swami’s father also composed a letter to send with Swami to the headmaster.
(ii) Why did Swami feel that he was the worst boy on earth?
Ans: Swami went to school feeling that he was the worst perjurer (মিথ্যেবাদী) on earth because he mixed the lies with reality about Samuel's character to his father that he caned children who did not complete their homework and came late to class. He thought telling such lies would make his father to let him stay at home.
(iii) How was Samuel actually by nature?
Ans: Samuel was Swaminathan's Mathematical teacher in school. He was a very tough teacher and very stern with his students. He used to give them harsh punishment when they did not do their homework or anything that he wanted them to do. Sometimes, he even beat them with a cane.
(iv) Describe the appearance of Samuel as described by Swami.
Ans: Samuel was a Mathematics teacher. He was very strict and angry. He used to punish the boys and even beat them. Swami was scared to go to school because of him. Probably, Samuel was not very harsh. But Swami did not want to go to school so he added some lies and told his father that Samuel was very cruel.
(B) Complete the following Sentences with information from Unit-2 of the text ‘Father’s Help’: 2×3=6
(i) As Swami was ready to go to school, his father had composed a long letter to the headmaster. He put it in an envelope and sealed it.
(ii) Swami felt himself as the worst boy on earth while he was carrying the letter his father had written for his headmaster. The letter contained a complaint against his teacher Samuel. Swami had projected to his father that Samuel beat up boys mercilessly.
(iii) Swami felt utter confusion with dizziness as he could not decide if Samuel really deserved the allegations made against him in the letter. The more he thought of Samuel, the more Swami grieved for him.
