In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

These opening verses of the Gospel of John make one of the clearest declarations in all of Scripture: Jesus the Christ is eternal. He did not begin at Bethlehem. He did not come into existence at creation. He was already there — before time, before matter, before light, before the world.

The passage reveals three foundational truths:

1.) The Word is eternal — “In the beginning was the Word.”
2.) The Word is fully God — “The Word was God.”
3.) The Word is Creator, Life, and Light — everything that exists came through Him, and the light of His life cannot be overcome by darkness.
