It is virtually undisputed that today the most popular explanation of the cross is that of Penal Substitution, that God who is Holy cannot merely forgive men, but instead must pour out His wrath and chose to do so on Jesus, thereby saving us from the wrath of God. But is this what Scripture teaches? Is this explanation in keeping with what the early Church taught? When was this teaching introduced and are there any problems with it? Does Isaiah 53 teach Penal Substitution? What are the unique claims of PSA? We will answer these questions and more!
