This English/Scottish folk song dates back at least to the Elizabethan era and tells the tale of John Barleycorn, a personification of barley and of the beer made from it. In the song, he suffers indignities, attacks, and death that correspond to the various stages of barley cultivation and brewing, such as sowing, reaping and soaking. There is a possible link to the idea of the Scottish Wicker Man festival.
It looks rather a gruesome song with drownings and stabbings, but there is a happier side, in that John is always reborn in the next year. It is really just a celebration of the barley harvest and delights that follow.
There are quite a few verses which tell the tale so the song is around six minutes long, but each part gets a chance to sing the tune, and have the occasional rest. Some sections are in unison.
The piano part is lively and with some lovely lyrical moments.
It is arranged in Dorian mode and the closest minor key and there are plenty of open and consecutive fifths in the vocal parts to reflect the style and age of the song.
It is classified as intermediate in difficulty.
