Retinal Detachment is a serious eye condition that can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated on time. In this video, Dr. Sugandha Goel, Vitreoretinal Surgeon at Centre For Sight, Mohali, explains what retinal detachment is, why it happens, and how early treatment can help restore vision.
The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye where images are formed. When fluid collects under this layer, the retina can move away from its normal position, leading to retinal detachment. This can happen due to weak areas in the retina, tears, injuries, or sudden changes inside the eye.
Common warning signs include sudden flashes of light, black spots or floaters in vision, and a curtain-like shadow coming in front of the eye. These symptoms should never be ignored. The later retinal detachment is diagnosed, the poorer the visual outcome after surgery.
Dr. Sugandha Goel explains that retinal detachment is treatable with timely surgery. If treated early, vision can often be saved and sometimes restored. After surgery, certain precautions are required for 2–3 weeks. In cases where gas or oil is placed inside the eye, patients may be advised to sleep in a face-down (prone) position for better healing. Dust and water exposure should be avoided, and regular follow-ups are essential for recovery.
If you or your loved ones experience flashes, floaters, sudden vision changes, or curtain-like shadows, consult a retina specialist immediately. Don’t compromise on your vision — early action can save your sight.
