BAT’ONEBIS NANINA
Imereti, West-Central Georgia, from Ensemble Mzetamze
Bat’onebi are ritual healing songs sung throughout Georgia to address the Bat’onebi (spirit-lords of disease). The Bat’onebi are believed to be the descendents of the great Mother Goddess Nana, protector of children and the earth. The Bat’onebi must be appeased by decorating the stricken child’s room with violets, roses, red textiles, and offerings of sweet foods. Family members and friends holding lit beeswax candles circle the ill child singing soothing songs to encourage the Bat’onebi to leave the house, taking the affliction away with them.
“Lullaby, oh Bat’onebi, naninana, oh lords, nana, amuse yourselves sweetly, oh Bat’tonebo. By Nanina, the mother of the Bat’onebi, there stands a golden cradle… Within lies the Bat’onebi’s prince… From time to time one rocks it… From time to time one tells him… Lullaby, oh Bat’onebi, Naninana, amuse yourselves."
Performed by Maclovia Quintana, Katya Schoenberg, and Kelly Atkins at Wintersongs 2024 / SUPRA: A Seasonal Feast of Songs from Caucasus Georgia on December 20, 2024 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Oakland, CA.
