In this episode of our CHSAA Media Day series from this past fall at Mount St. Michael Academy in The Bronx, we spoke to two representatives from the league's most prominent team in the Crusaders of Archbishop Stepinac in seniors Jasiah Jervis and Darius Ratliff.
Throughout the last eight years, this powerhouse from White Plains, New York has been holding their own and dominating in the Catholic League,. as they've been in the championship game every year since 2018 (minus the two years when COVID-19 had the basketball scene on pause), when they won their first championship since 2010 and the first in the highest classification since 1960, as well as the school's one & only New York State Federation championship. The last three seasons, they have walked away with three consecutive championships and are one of five schools in CHSAA history to have achieved the feat.
This year, they're attempting to set history, as the first team to win four consecutive titles.
With a group of nine seniors, including five that are already signed to Division I schools, including the aforementioned Jervis (Michigan State), Ratliff (USC), his twin brother Adonis Ratliiff (USC), Dylan Perry (Monmouth) and Hassan Kouriessi (Fordham), and other talented, unsigned seniors such as Ameer Smith and Jack Coco.
There are also solid underclassmen such as junior Josh Rivera, the sophomore trio of Jourdan Archevald, Elijah Novotny and Larry Jenkins and the freshmen such as Ethan Riullano and Tristan Robinson, that have a chance to make an impact in the future.
In this episode, we spoke to Jervis and Ratliff about life at Stepinac, their four-year journey at the prestigious school, this year's schedule, Jervis being part of a great basketball lineage from the Castle Hill section in The Bronx and also Ratliff on being a transplant from the Buckhead section of Atlanta, Georgia to New York.
Side note: Congrats to Jasiah Jervis, Adonis Ratliff and Darius Ratliff on being selected to the McDonald's All-American Game, which will be taking place in Glendale, Arizona on March 31st. All three are the fourth, fifth and sixth players from Stepinac to play in the McDonald's Game, after R.J. Davis (class of 2020), A.J. Griffin (class of 2021) and Johnuel "Boogie" Fland (class of 2024). The Ratliff twins will also be playing in the Iverson Classic All-American Game in Hampton, Virginia on May 2nd.
