So in recent years there’s been quite a few headlines in mainstream media outlets …warning about a connection between hair loss and heart disease.
Now, I have to be honest.
Usually I tune out the health and science “breakthroughs” that I see reported in mainstream media.
More often than not, they’re just sensationalized reports blown out of proportion.
Or studies taken completely out of context, and reported in a very misleading way.
But in this case, I have to tell you, the headlines were on to something.
The research linking baldness to heart disease goes back a few decade…all the way to the 1970s.
Over the years there have been loads of studies, mostly cross-sectional.
Cross-sectional means that you compare a sample of men with heart disease vs non-heart disease, at a single point in time.
And you see if there’s any significant difference in the rates of baldness between the two groups.
These kinds of studies are basically a snapshot in time, and they’re relatively easy to conduct.
But more powerful evidence comes from so-called prospective studies.
In a prospective study, you can take a group of healthy young men, who don’t suffer from heart disease, and you follow them up over time.
And then you see if those who go on to develop heart disease are also more likely to develop hair loss.
For example a recent prospective study that made headlines was published… out of Denmark in 2013.
I’ve linked to this study - as well as all the other studies I’ll mention today- in the description below.
The study involved 10,885 men, as young as 20 years old, who had no heart disease at the start.
The men were followed up for a whopping 35 years, from 1976 to 2011.
Over these 35 years, 3401 developed heart disease, and 1708 had a heart attack.
These men could then be compared against all the men who didn’t develop heart problems.
Due to the large numbers of participants in this study, if there is any relationship between heart disease and baldness you would expect to see it clearly in the results.
And indeed, after controlling for participants’ age, as well as a number of other factors like socioeconomic status, smoking and alcohol consumption, baldness was still linked to heart disease and heart attack.
This was true for both frontal and crown baldness.
A couple of years ago, we had the publication of a meta-analysis…of all published cross-sectional and observation studies on the topic.
A meta-analysis is basically a study of studies.
So you take all the individual studies, and you pool their results together.
