The Last Boeing 747 Has Been Delivered!
Known as the “Queen of the Skies” or simply “The Whale,” the 1,574th and final Boeing 747 has been delivered, marking the end of a legendary 50-year production journey. The Boeing 747 (Jumbo Jet) made its first flight in 1970. Boeing originally planned this aircraft as a cargo plane for the United States Armed Forces but lost that competition. However, one of the company’s most important clients at the time, Pan Am, persistently demanded a large passenger aircraft, and thus the journey of the 747 began. Its iconic front-end design was created by Joe Sutter. As the first wide-body aircraft of its time, the Boeing 747 featured a double-deck design and had an enormous passenger capacity that seemed like a dream to many.
The Boeing 747 held the title of the world’s largest aircraft until the Airbus A380 entered service in 2006. For 35 years, it reigned as the largest, and throughout its time in the skies, it was used in many different ways — as cargo transport, as a rocket carrier, to transport famous world leaders, and even as a flying casino. The Boeing 747 not only became famous for its achievements but also for being involved in some of the deadliest and most tragic accidents in aviation history. It served as a teacher for aviation, an industry where many rules were written in blood. The Tenerife disaster, where two Boeing 747s collided on the runway, and the Japan Airlines crash are among its most unforgettable incidents.
