So, essentially, Hollyleaf saves Ivypool and is dying, and Brambleclaw has just said goodbye to Firestar, as he died. Brambleclaw is now the leader of Thunderclan. When he sees hollyleaf, dying, he remembers how proud he was of her as child, how much he loved her, and then how he has already lost her once- and how hollyleaf has been consumed by grief and panic for so long, perhaps because as a father he failed to equip her with the emotional tools she needed to survive, and he makes the decision that he will not fail her again. Brambleclaw decides in this moment that his family, his daughter, matters more to him than ambition, than leadership, than power. As she's dying, he names her deputy, then steps down from leadership, which makes her leader of Thunderclan- he throws her in the moonpool to receive her nine lives, just as she's dying, and she bursts out of the water with her eight lives as Hollystar. She makes Ivypool her deputy and Brambleclaw knows that he made the right decision in his heart.
