Nothing like spending this great American holiday with some great American ragtime named after a great American bovine. The Buffalo Rag by Tom Turpin was published in 1904, and recorded the following year by banjo virtuoso Vess Ossman.
The score is perhaps Turpin’s most unique and personal and due to these idiosyncrasies, it’s one of his less recorded pieces. West Coast Ragtime Society’s own Dr. Elliott Adams featured this rag as the title track on his 1989 Stomp Off LP release. It was also recorded by Milton Kaye during the 1970s on an extensive album dedicated to Tom Turpin’s Rosebud Bar.
