In 1947, while much of Punjab was engulfed in violence during the Partition of India, one city remained remarkably peaceful—Malerkotla.
The reason traces back over 250 years. In 1705, when the two young sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji were sentenced to be bricked alive, Nawab Sher Mohammed Khan of Malerkotla openly opposed the decision, declaring that punishing innocent children was against humanity.
According to tradition, his heartfelt protest became known as "Haa Da Naara" or the "Cry for Justice." When Guru Gobind Singh Ji later learned of the Nawab's stand, he is believed to have blessed Malerkotla and its people.
Many believe that this blessing helped protect the city during the horrific Partition riots of 1947, making Malerkotla one of the few places in Punjab to remain largely untouched by communal violence.
Today, the sacred site of Gurdwara Haa Da Naara Sahib stands as a reminder of this extraordinary story of courage, humanity, and religious harmony.
