The big topic this month, to no one's surprise, is the upcoming total solar eclipse. As preparation, Dave Weixelman describes for the Nevada County Astronomers the mechanics of a solar eclipse, what phases an eclipse goes through, and what to expect if you're able to witness the eclipse from within the path of totality.
Note that the "depth" of an eclipse can be measured in several ways. During the talk, Dave notes that those viewing the eclipse from the club's home area will see a maximum of 45% of the Sun being covered. This is measured as a percentage of the Sun's diameter. It's also reported by some sites as 34%, which is by area of the Sun covered instead of its diameter.
Dave is an amateur astronomer interested in eclipses, astrophotography, and comet observing. He has seen 6 total solar eclipses starting with the July 10, 1972 eclipse when he traveled to Nova Scotia just out of high school.
