(16 Aug 2018) A Pennsylvania man who says he was sexually abused by a priest in the 1980s says he wants "to see the evil inside the church be taken away".
Jim VanSickle says he was physically and emotionally abused by a priest in the Erie diocese in 1981.
VanSickle told the AP that his motivation for speaking about his experience was not to "tear down the church" but to allow the Catholic Church to "redeem itself".
His comments came in the wake of a state grand jury report stating that around 300 Roman Catholic priests in Pennsylvania molested more than 1,000 children - and possibly more - since the 1940s.
The report, released on Tuesday, also accused senior church officials, including a clergyman who is now the archbishop of Washington, D.C., of systematically covering up complaints.
The "real number" of abused children and abusive priests might be higher since some secret church records were lost and some victims never came forward, the grand jury said.
U.S. bishops adopted sweeping reforms in 2002 when clergy abuse became a national crisis for the church, including stricter requirements for reporting accusations to law enforcement and a streamlined process for removing clerics who abuse children.
But the grand jury said more changes are needed.
"If this doesn't change then I don't see myself coming back to the church," said VanSickle.
