في السياق التاريخي، تم اكتشاف آثار لأواني طهي تشبه الكسكسي في قبور تعود إلى القرن الثالث قبل الميلاد، وقد كانت هذه الأواني جزءًا من دفن الملوك النوميديين، مما يشير إلى أن تحضير الطعام كان جزءًا من الطقوس الجنائزية . وقد تم العثور على هذه الاكتشافات في مواقع أثرية هامة في منطقة تيارت ومنطقة القبائل في الجزائر ، وهي مناطق كانت تشكل مملكة نوميديا القديمة.
تحتفظ هذه القطع الأثرية التاريخية في متحف سيرتا في قسنطينة، الذي يُعتبر من أبرز المتاحف في الجزائر ويضم مجموعة كبيرة من الآثار التي تسلط الضوء على الحضارة النوميدية القديمة.

D'après tous les historiens, le couscous est un plat dont les origines remontent au règne du roi Massinissa de l'ancien royaume de Numidie, qui s'étendait sur des territoires aujourd'hui situés en Algérie. Massinissa, qui régna au IIe siècle avant J.-C., s'efforça de développer l'agriculture, ce qui contribua à l'émergence de certains mets traditionnels devenus partie intégrante du patrimoine culinaire de la région.
Historiquement, des ustensiles de cuisine ressemblant à ceux utilisés pour le couscous ont été découverts dans des tombes datant du IIIe siècle avant J.-C. Ces ustensiles faisaient partie des rites funéraires des rois numides, suggérant que la préparation des aliments était une composante essentielle des rituels funéraires. Ces découvertes ont été faites sur d'importants sites archéologiques des régions du Tiaret et de Kabylie, en Algérie, territoires qui constituaient l'ancien royaume de Numidie.
Ces objets historiques sont conservés au musée Cirta de Constantine, l'un des plus importants musées d'Algérie, qui abrite une vaste collection d'artefacts témoignant de l'ancienne civilisation numide.

Historically, cooking vessels resembling those used for couscous have been discovered in tombs dating back to the 3rd century BC. These vessels were part of the burial rites of Numidian kings, suggesting that food preparation was an integral part of funerary rituals. These discoveries were made at important archaeological sites in the Tiaret and Kabylie regions of Algeria, areas that comprised the ancient kingdom of Numidia.
These historical artifacts are housed in the Cirta Museum in Constantine, one of Algeria's most prominent museums, which boasts a vast collection of artifacts that illuminate the ancient Numidian civilization
