*For a while, research suggested the Whale Shark was the largest fish to have ever lived, possibly outgrowing the prehistoric Megalodon. This was based on older, more modest sized estimates for Megalodon. More recent research suggests Megalodon probably reached well over 20m in length, so the Whale Shark's record is now best seen as the largest living fish, not the largest of all time.
