Stephanie Leavell’s (@music_for_kiddos ) “Blowing in the Wind” is a perfect song for fall / autumn for preschools. Instead of singing “my scarf” we sing “my leaf” and use scenes of red, yellow, and orange. We also sing this song in French, and this verse is “flying in the wind”:
Volent au vent / Flying in the wind
Volent au vent / Flying in the wind
Les feuilles volent au vent / The leaves fly in the wind
Maintenant elles tombent / Now they’re falling (down)
Tombent aven un / Falling (down) with a
Whoosh et tock / Whoosh and plop
« Tock » is an onomatopoeic sound of something hitting the ground, instead of the English « plop »
The second part I had to write a poetic translation:
Prend ta feuille et / take your scarf and
Fait une boule / make a ball
Fait une boule / make a ball
Pour qu’elle roule / for rolling it
Prend ta feuille et / take your scarf and
Fait une boule / make a ball
1-2-3, lance-la! / 1-2-3, throw it!
I let the children choose other action words themselves—making the lyrics child-led—which increases their engagement in the song, improves their listening, as they listen to the suggestions of their friends, and increases the degree of cooperation in the classroom as kids act out their friend’s suggestions. We are taking turns and practicing patience as we listen for our own turn in class, to suggest actions and lyrics like spinning, turning (big circles that cross the midline), jumping, flying, falling, wiggling, and shaking: all great for gross-motor development!
The second part is super for fine-motor development as we slowly use all our fingers to crunch the scarf / leaf into a tiny ball inside our hands.
