Day 4 of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics belonged to the speed and the stones. Host Callan McClurg breaks down a historic night where the ice in Italy didn't just melt—it evaporated. We watched Jutta Leerdam turn the speed skating oval into her own personal slipstream, while the American curling duo of Korey Dropkin and Cory Thiesse walked into a den of screaming Italians and snatched a ticket to the Gold Medal game. It was a night of Dutch records, Swiss double-golds, and a Team USA curling squad that is officially playing for history.
The Nightly Podium leads with Jutta Leerdam’s record-breaking redemption in the Women’s 1000m. After her teammate Femke Kok shattered the Olympic record just minutes prior, Leerdam lowered it again to 1:12.31 to secure a Dutch 1-2 finish and the Netherlands' first Gold of these Games. We also track the "Satisfying Silver" of Eileen Gu, who secured her fourth career Olympic medal in a razor-thin Slopestyle final against Switzerland’s Mathilde Gremaud. But the upset of the night happened on the ice of Cortina, where Dropkin and Thiesse defeated the defending Olympic champions from Italy in a 9-8 thriller, silencing the home crowd with a clutch final hammer.
Switzerland officially takes over the medal table momentum thanks to Franjo von Allmen, our ETB Performance of the Night recipient. By winning the Team Combined alongside Tanguy Nef, von Allmen became the first double-gold medalist of the 2026 Games, proving he is the undisputed King of the Stelvio. Meanwhile, Team USA continues to build steam; the Women’s Hockey team delivered a 5-0 shutout against Switzerland to set up a massive Tuesday clash against Canada. However, the news isn't all golden for the Americans, as Lindsey Vonn confirmed her Games are over following a complex tibia fracture suffered in practice.
As we look toward Day 5, the stakes only get higher. Jordan Stolz begins his quest for triple individual Gold in the Men's 1500m, and the Mixed Doubles Curling team fights Sweden for the top step of the podium. From the hills of the Ski Jumping Normal Hill—where Germany’s Philipp Raimund conquered his fear of heights to take Gold—to the upcoming "Ice War" between the USA and Canada, Olympics from The Bench is your home for every bruise and every breakthrough.
