This series of fifteen 20-minute lectures explains the basics of how we smell. The scientific viewpoint is that of the vibrational theory of olfaction. The vibrational theory is still under active debate, as most scientific theories are. it is my belief that the alternative theory, based on shape, does not fit the empirical facts of smell. There is no lecture series based on the shape theory and I do not believe one can be made.
This lecture describes the receptors that sense smell in our nose and the standard, shape-based explanation for how they work.
