A social media post directed at Prime Minister Mark Carney led to a police visit and warning, as Toronto Police confirmed that concerning online content may prompt action even below the criminal threshold.
Speaking to the Brandon Gonez Show Tanya Walker, Managing Partner at Walker Law, explained that these visits are often intended as a caution. Content that is derogatory, defamatory, or perceived as threatening, regardless of intent, can trigger police attention, particularly when it is traceable to a specific individual or household.
She also notes that, given limited resources, police may issue warnings in lower-priority situations rather than proceed with charges. Importantly, these warnings are not limited to public officials. Anyone posting statements online that could be interpreted as threatening may be subject to similar action.
Her key takeaway: Think carefully before posting because even statements made in anger or without intent can cross a legal line.
