I used laminated oak boards, 2 flange bearings and a steel stand. I would say it came out 7 out of 10, but you can judge for yourself! Side note: I was not confused with measuring 16-inch increments, I was trying to avoid the knots!
Update: I have been using my wheel for about a year and a half now a few times per week. I would update the construction outcome to 9.5 out of 10, with a half-point off for aesthetics only. The wheel has held true and required no maintenance or adjustment, other than adding some holes for batt pegs, which is amazing that I actually made something fully functional on my first attempt!
While it is very difficult and labor intensive to center large balls of clay, it can be done with patience. I have been making peices in the 2-3 pound range (I weigh 1000-1500g for consistency) and I feel that a good soft clay performs well on this wheel without exhausting me. I can throw for hours and feel great afterwards, but if I take a few weeks off I definitely get out of shape! I have also been throwing off the hump, just because I only have to wedge one big lump, then I can roughly center it thus saving much energy for plenty of kicking!
