Dies sind einige der Fragen, die Fabio De Masi (fraktionsloses Mitglied des Europäischen Parlaments) im Gespräch mit dem bekannten US-amerikanischen Ökonomen Prof James K. Galbraith am 11.11. im Europäischen Parlament diskutierte.

Über Prof Galbraith:
Prof. Galbraith, Sohn des legendären Wirtschaftsberaters von John F. Kennedy, hat eine Professur für Staatswissenschaften an der University of Texas in Austin und den Lloyd M. Bentsen Jr. Lehrstuhl für die Beziehungen zwischen Regierung und Wirtschaft an der Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs. In den frühen 1980er Jahren war er geschäftsführender Direktor des Joint Economic Committee des US Kongresses. Von 1996 bis 2016 war er Vorsitzender des Vorstands der Ökonomen für Frieden und Sicherheit. Zudem leitet er die Ungleichheits-Forschung an der University of Texas.

Von 1993 bis 1997 war Galbraith technischer Chefberater für makroökonomische Reformen bei der Staatlichen Planungskommission der Volksrepublik China. Im Jahr 2010 wurde er in die Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei gewählt. Im Jahr 2014 war er Preisträger des Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economics. Im Jahr 2020 erhielt er den Veblen-Commons Award der Association for Evolutionary Economics. Im Jahr 2023 wurde er in die Lissabonner Akademie der Wissenschaften gewählt.

Er besitzt Abschlüsse der Harvard University, der Yale University (M.A., M.Phil, Ph.D.) sowie akademische Auszeichnungen von Universitäten in Ecuador, Frankreich und der Russischen Föderation. Er ist Marshall-Stipendiat und Mitglied auf Lebenszeit des Council on Foreign Relations.

About Prof Galbraith:
Prof Galbraith holds a professorship in Government at The University of Texas at Austin and the Lloyd M. Bentsen Jr. Chair in Government/Business Relations at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs. He was executive director of the Joint Economic Committee of the United States Congress in the early 1980s. He chaired the board of Economists for Peace and Security from 1996 to 2016 and directs The University of Texas Inequality Project.

From 1993 to 1997 Galbraith served as chief technical adviser for Macroeconomic Reform to the State Planning Commission of the People's Republic of China. In 2010, he was elected to the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. In 2014 he was co-winner of the Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economics. In 2020 he received the Veblen-Commons Award of the Association for Evolutionary Economics. In 2023, he was elected to the Lisbon Academy of Sciences.

He holds degrees from Harvard University (AB, magna cum laude), in economics from Yale University (M.A., M.Phil, Ph.D.), and academic honors from universities in Ecuador, France and the Russian Federation. He is a Marshall Scholar and a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
