I was working on my 1998 3rd Gen Toyota 4Runner when I was struggling with a stuck engine dowel pin.
In this video, I walk you through the process of removing a stubborn dowel pin from an engine block to prep for new cylinder heads. I tried using a slide hammer and puller set, but they didn’t get the job done. Here’s what worked for me:
Tapping threads into the dowel for a bolt extractor to grip.
Applying a lot of PB Blaster and WD-40 for lubrication.
Using a torch (carefully!) alongside vice grips to finally free the dowel.
Pro Tip: Avoid overheating the dowel to prevent expansion
