The Magician from the Lower East Side
2012 improvised dance rendition • words mix from Lionel Ziprin (Abulafia)
This piece was improvised in 2012 using words from Lionel Ziprin's writing i received from his daughter ZIA. Lionel, a rebbe kabalist poet and underground figure of New York’s Lower East Side, known for his raw language, mythic imagery, and deep roots in Jewish mysticism, street culture, and postwar downtown art.
Lionel RIP is from the lineage of Abraham ben Samuel Abulafia (Hebrew: אברהם בן שמואל אבולעפיה) the founder of the school of "Prophetic Kabbalah". He was born in Zaragoza, Kingdom of Aragon, in 1240, and is assumed to have died sometime after 1291 following a stay on the island of Comino in the Maltese archipelago.
The text moves freely through time and place —
thirteen and a half, seventeen and a half,
cars, stables, second floors, frozen horses,
the Actor’s Studio, San Valentino.
The performance follows the cadence of the words rather than a fixed melody.
Spoken rhythm, instrumental space, and movement shape the piece as it unfolds, closer to a dance or scene than a conventional song.
The Magician appears as a young figure in motion — observant, unruly, learning through writing rather than school, advancing through instinct rather than instruction.
