Laura Belin recorded this video on January 20, 2026, at an Iowa Senate subcommittee on Senate Study Bill 3033, a bill filed by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services. The bill would remove the Iowa Code requirement for the state to maintain a research center in Iowa City.
The DAS unilaterally announced in June 2025 that it would shut down the State Historical Society of Iowa facility in Iowa City and began removing materials shortly thereafter. This bill would retroactively make that closure legal.
Republican State Senator Carrie Koelker chaired the subcommittee. Republican Senator Jeff Reichman and Democratic Senator Art Staed also served on the committee.
Representatives of the Department of Administrative Services spoke first in defense of the bill. Then members of the public spoke; all urged senators to oppose the bill.
Senators spoke last; Koelker and Reichman signed off on the bill. Staed refused to support it.
