Why did Communist China get richer than Democratic India?

In the mid-20th century, two ancient civilizations emerged from humiliation. Both were poor. Both had been traumatized by foreign rule. Both were determined to reclaim their dignity and build modern nations worthy of their past. One chose the ballot. The other chose bullets.

This video examines how China and India — despite similar starting points — took radically different political and economic paths, and why those choices produced dramatically different outcomes. While India embraced democracy and socialism, China pursued revolutionary communism before pivoting to market reforms under authoritarian rule. The result was decades of divergence: China’s relentless rise and India’s long stagnation.

We begin with India’s “lost decades” — the License Raj, socialist planning, bureaucracy inherited from the British Raj, and how state control choked entrepreneurship, competition, and growth. From Nehru and Indira Gandhi’s economic vision to the Emergency and decades of slow growth, we explore how good intentions produced unintended consequences.

The story then shifts to China’s turbulent revolution: Mao’s five-year plans, the Great Leap Forward, the largest famine in human history, and the Cultural Revolution. Out of that chaos emerged Deng Xiaoping, whose pragmatic embrace of markets — wrapped in communist legitimacy — ignited one of the fastest economic transformations ever recorded. Special Economic Zones, industrialization, and globalization turned China into the world’s factory.

But growth came at a cost. China’s reforms were possible only because it was an authoritarian, centralized state — able to act decisively, suppress dissent, and override political resistance. India, by contrast, remained a democracy — vibrant, diverse, but fragmented. Identity politics, caste coalitions, subsidies, and transactional governance distorted incentives and slowed reform.

The final chapter turns to India’s recent acceleration. Since 2014, India has focused on increasing state capacity through digitization, infrastructure, welfare reform, and economic formalization. Narendra Modi’s government has attempted to reconcile democracy with decisiveness — borrowing selectively from China’s playbook while operating within electoral constraints.

This is not a story about communism versus capitalism, or democracy versus dictatorship. It’s a deeper examination of incentives, institutions, and trade-offs — and why freedom, diversity, and representation can both empower and paralyze a nation.
