Alexandria Biennale 2026 — “This Too Shall Pass"

After a 12-year hiatus the Alexandria Biennale returns in September 2026 with its 27th edition, titled “This Too Shall Pass.” Curated by Alexandria-born artist Moataz Nasr (who represented Egypt at the 2017 Venice Biennale), the relaunch will spotlight about fifty artists mainly from the Mediterranean, with a few invited from other regions. The programme pairs a main exhibition with capsule shows across Alexandria’s museums to highlight emerging Egyptian talent, while performances and talks aim to engage local audiences. The biennale will activate landmark sites across the city — the Roman amphitheatre, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Qaitbay Citadel and Fouad Street — reconnecting contemporary practice with Alexandria’s layered cultural history. Shifting from earlier state-only models, organisers have established a public–private partnership: seed funding from the Ministry of Culture and local government complemented by private patrons to secure independence and align with international standards. Nasr frames the event as a catalyst for change: “the art scene in Egypt is like a lake that has been still for a long time… We want to throw a big stone into the lake and make waves.” This edition promises a truly renewed platform for regional dialogue, cultural exchange and a hopeful moment for Alexandria’s creative future.
