Описание: Thursday marked a historic day for Canada, as Lt.-Gen. Jennie Carignan officially took over command of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) — making her the first female to ever do so.

Commemorating the change of command and the new chief of the defence staff (CDF), Ottawa held a ceremony at the Canadian War Museum, where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and National Defence Minister Bill Blair spoke, commending Carignan, as well as former Lt.-Gen Wayne Eyre — who officially retired after decades of service.

After acknowledging her skillsets and experiences, Trudeau told Carignan, "You are the very first woman to ever become chief of the defence staff. The very first in the G7 and in the G20. You are a role model for all Canadians and for the world."

Prior to her appointment as the new CDF, Carignan served as the chief of professional conduct and culture for three years. In addition to being the first female in her new role, Carignan was also the first woman to command a combat unit in the Canadian military. Her career has included deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Syria.

On having the opportunity of being Canada's latest CDF, Carignan said, "Over the past few weeks, many people have asked me how I feel. Although many emotions initially collided with each other, today, I can say that I feel ready, poised and supported to take on this manifold challenge."
