विजयादशमी पर नीलकंठ दर्शन
दशहरा या कभी भी नीलकंठ के दर्शन शुभ होते है
नीलकंठ तुम नीले रहियो, दूध-भात का भोजन करियो, हमरी बात राम से कहियो', इस लोकोक्त‍ि के अनुसार नीलकंठ पक्षी को भगवान का प्रतिनिधि माना गया है। दशहरा पर्व पर इस पक्षी के दर्शन को शुभ और भाग्य को जगाने वाला माना जाता है। जिसके चलते दशहरे के दिन हर व्यक्ति इसी आस में छत पर जाकर आकाश को निहारता है कि उन्हें नीलकंठ पक्षी के दर्शन हो जाएं। ताकि साल भर उनके यहां शुभ कार्य का सिलसिला चलता रहे।
इस दिन नीलकंठ के दर्शन होने से घर के धन-धान्य में वृद्धि होती है, और फलदायी एवं शुभ कार्य घर में अनवरत्‌ होते रहते हैं। सुबह से लेकर शाम तक किसी वक्त नीलकंठ दिख जाए तो वह देखने वाले के लिए शुभ होता है।

कहते है श्रीराम ने इस पक्षी के दर्शन के बाद ही रावण पर विजय प्राप्त की थी। विजय दशमी का पर्व जीत का पर्व है। दशहरे पर नीलकण्ठ के दर्शन की परंपरा बरसों से जुड़ी है। लंका जीत के बाद जब भगवान राम को ब्राह्मण हत्या का पाप लगा था। भगवान राम ने अपने भाई लक्ष्मण के साथ मिलकर भगवान शिव की पूजा अर्चना की एवं ब्राह्मण हत्या के पाप से स्वयं को मुक्त कराया। तब भगवान शिव नीलकंठ पक्षी के रुप में धरती पर पधारे थे। नीलकण्ठ अर्थात् जिसका गला नीला हो। जनश्रुति और धर्मशास्त्रों के अनुसार भगवान शंकर ही नीलकण्ठ हैं। इस पक्षी को पृथ्वी पर भगवान शिव का प्रतिनिधि और स्वरूप दोनों माना गया है। नीलकंठ पक्षी भगवान शिव का ही रुप है। भगवान शिव नीलकंठ पक्षी का रूप धारण कर धरती पर विचरण करते हैं।
किसानों का मित्र :- वैज्ञानिकों के अनुसार यह भाग्य विधाता होने के साथ-साथ किसानों का मित्र भी है, क्योंकि सही मायने में नीलकंठ किसानों के भाग्य का रखवाला भी होता है, जो खेतों में कीड़ों को खाकर किसानों की फसलों की रक्षा करता है।

The Indian roller is very common in the populated plains of India and associated with legends. It is said to be sacred to Vishnu, and used to be caught and released during festivals such as Dussera and Durga Puja. A local Hindi name is 'Neelkanth', meaning "blue throat", a name associated with the deity Shiva (who drank poison resulting in the blue throat).
The display of this bird is an aerobatic display, with the twists and turns that give this species its English name. The breeding season is March to June, slightly earlier in southern India. Displays when perched include bill-up displays, bowing, allopreening, wing drooping and tail fanning.Holes created by woodpeckers or wood boring insects in palms are favoured for nesting in some areas. Nest cavities may also be made by tearing open rotten tree trunks or in cavities in building.The cavity is usually unlined and is made up mainly of debris from the wood. The normal clutch consists of about 3-5 eggs. The eggs are white and broad oval or nearly spherical.[Both sexes incubate the eggs for about 17 to 19 days. The young fledge and leave the nest after about a month. Nearly 80% of the eggs hatch and fledge.

The call of the Indian roller is a harsh crow-like chack sound. It also makes a variety of other sounds, including metallic boink calls. It is especially vociferous during the breeding season.
