There's so much more to The Great Barrier Reef than most people realise. The Reef is larger than Japan, It's larger than Germany, and it's longer than the distance from Vancouver in Canada, to Mexico. There are over 3000 individual coral reefs, 600 islands, and 300 cays. Simply put, it's enormous, and so much of it is unexplored and overlooked by divers.
We spent the best part of 2022 on project filming some of these lesser known coral reef systems, islands and dives with Tourism and Events Queensland, and we saw some incredible reef systems, and witnessed some breathtaking wildlife experiences.
This highlight reel showcases some of our best footage from this project.
The destinations we filmed on this project are located off Townsville, and The Southern Great Barrier Reef. The sites include:
John Brewer Reef, which we dove with Adrenalin Snorkel and Dive. This reef is just jaw droppingly beautiful, offering divers and snorkelers some of the most vibrant hard coral reefs I've ever seen, and it's teaming with fish life! It's honestly a reef right out of Blue Planet.
The Museum of Underwater Art, or MOUA, which is also located on John Brewer Reef just a short swim away from the above mentioned hard coral gardens. This attraction has a very different offering available, and lets divers explore an underwater museum with exhibitions updated regularly.
Keeper Reef off Magnetic Island, which we dove with Pro Dive Magnetic Island. This reef is epic, and has a wide range of vibrant coral gardens and sea fans on offer, and some huge swim throughs and cave systems at The Cathedral.
The SS Yongala Shipwreck which we dove with Yongala Dive at Alva Beach (near Ayr). This shipwreck has been listed as the worlds second best wreck dive a number of times, and it's easy to see why! The wildlife here is just unbelievable. From massive schools of barracuda, Giant Trevally, Marble Rays, Eagle Rays, sharks, Olive Sea Snakes and a huge array of other marine life that reside there year round.
Lady Elliot Island on the Southern Great Barrier Reef. The wildlife experiences this island offers is just phenomenal. We filmed this island in peak Manta Ray season, and it did not disappoint! We moment we had in the water we were surrounded by Manta Rays cleaning on the cleaning stations, feeding on the surface, and interacting with one another. We had encounters with wild Dolphins, and even Humpback whales while freediving.
Lady Musgrave Island on the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Similarly, this Island is home to a wide variety of marine life, and particularly a huge number of turtles. The reef is layered with dense walls full of vibrant hard corals, and large coral plates. Truly a divers paradise here!
Great Keppel Island off Yeppoon. This very accessible Island, while being much easier to access than the above two islands, had a lot to offer ocean lovers and divers. Egg Rock was teaming with large pelagic species, sea snakes and vibrant coral gardens.
The ex-HMAS Tobruk Wreck. In the short time since this wreck has been underwater, it's become home to a massive range of marine life including a large number of resident Green Sea Turtles, large Marble Rays, Cowtail Rails, Octopus, and large schools of fish. The amount of life on this wreck is usually something you'd expect to see after almost a decade underwater, yet the Toburk Wreck has only been down for 4-5 years.
