And what if anyone can learn it? In this talk, fundraising expert Kenna Barrett, PhD shares her tools for reverse engineering a form of social interaction that many people find daunting or confusing. She will share how to adopt the right attitude toward schmoozing (which she defines here as having pleasant yet goal-driven conversations), how to break down different genres of schmoozing, and why it's important to expect the unexpected.
Kenna Barrett is an accomplished non-profit leader. She writes and lectures on developing your personal style as a fundraiser, learning from fear and social anxiety, and philanthropy and social justice. Kenna brings a hands-on, practical approach to her lectures on non-profit leadership and resource development. She seeks to demystify the process of asking for money through the use of experiential opportunities such as structured role-plays, exploring the empirical literature on consumer behavior, storytelling, and personal insight. After serving in leadership fundraising roles at Yale and Johns Hopkins universities, Kenna is now the director of development for the American Pediatric Medical Association (APMA) and the APMA Educational Foundation in Bethesda, MD. Kenna holds a BA from Wellesley College, an MA from the University of California-San Diego, and Ph.D. (English) from the University of Rhode Island. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
