Описание: The Austro-Hungarian cemetery in Brunico (German: Soldatenfriedhof Bruneck or Waldfriedhof Bruneck) is a war cemetery located in a wooded area on the slope of the so-called Kühbergl, near the road to Riscone.

The cemetery is held up by citizens and visitors as an example of tolerance and respect for the dead of other peoples (Russians, Germans, and Serbs) and other religions (Catholics, Orthodox Christians, and Muslims).

In times when borders did not allow international communication, mothers of the fallen decided to honor their sons buried in distant lands by adopting the graves of the fallen from abroad who rested in the local cemetery, to give equal honor to all.

During World War I up to 3 military hospitals were established in Brunico where wounded and sick soldiers from the nearby Dolomite front were admitted. Since there were many who in time died in these lazarettos and it was no longer possible to bury them in the municipal cemetery, the Bruneck stage command commissioned the architect Berchtold, an officer of the Austrian Engineer Corps, to build a special cemetery on the slopes of Kühbergl, south of the town. It was built by Russian prisoners, opened on July 3, 1915, and taken into custody by then-mayor Josef Schifferegger. Burials began soon afterwards. In 1921 a women's committee, headed by the mayor's wife, was formed and has been responsible for the upkeep of the cemetery ever since

Graves bear wooden crosses, some adorned with artistic wrought-iron work. The interethnic and interdenominational character of the Austro-Hungarian army is emphasized by the religious symbols where the Latin cross of the Catholics and Protestants, is juxtaposed with Orthodox crosses, Jewish stars, crescents especially of the Bosnian soldiers. The cemetery is thus separated according to the faith of the fallen.
