If you can make it through a solo by singing the melody in your head — that’s great. But if you feel stuck thinking only about the melody, like you can’t access your vocabulary or ideas… that’s when it’s time to level up.
In this video, I’ll show you a technique called melody mapping — where you break down the phrasing of the melody and use that as a guide for your solos. It helps you sound musical, stay in form, and finally use the licks and ideas you’ve been working so hard on.
We’ll walk through how to do this using Charlie Parker’s “Donna Lee” — and I’ll show you how to solo creatively without ever getting lost.
