Why Should Children Attend Rosalyn Yalow Charter School?
Because Rosalyn Yalow builds character as well as academic achievement through art, chess, and fencing programs taught by Juilliard School graduates, international chess Grandmasters, and Olympic fencers. No other Bronx school matches the breadth of programs Rosalyn Yalow given to our students.
The Rosalyn Yalow Charter School is named after Dr. Rosalyn Yalow, a Nobel Prize-winning medical physicist from the Bronx, who did her award-winning research at the Bronx Veterans Administration Hospital.
Founded in 2015, Rosalyn Yalow is a K-8 elementary school located in the beautiful Cardinal Hayes High School. We have a dual mission of developing strong moral character and excellent academic achievement for all students, including special needs students, English language learners, and homeless children.
Our school serves at-risk populations: 40% of our students are classified as either English language learners (ELLs) or Forever ELLs (FELLs, those ELLs who achieved a designation of Commanding); 96% are economically disadvantaged; 17% have disabilities (SWD). Of all these students, 22% are homeless (including 5% recent migrants); 48% are black, 48% Hispanic; 54% speak a language other than English in their homes. In spite of these demographic risk factors, Rosalyn Yalow’s student performance on the 2025 statewide NYS ELA and math tests was outstanding!
In math, Yalow beat scores for New York City and New York State. We trounced our local Bronx school districts, CSD7 and CSD9, where the majority of our students reside, with passing rates of 66%, 90%, and 59% for grades 3, 4, and 5, respectively. Impressively, passing rates for Yalow’s homeless students even exceeded passing rates of general education students in NYC and NYS in grades 3 and 4, while matching passing rates of general education students in grade 5. Yalow’s homeless students had passing rates of 64%, 75%, and 57% in grades 3, 4, and 5, respectfully, compared with statewide passing rates for general education students of 60%, 54%, and 54%, respectively.
The social-emotional health supports we provide our students is critical to these academic successes. Montefiore School Health Program has been providing mental health services for Yalow students since November 2020. Highly trained licensed psychologists and social workers address the emotional needs of children and families through confidential evaluation in the primary language of the family, individual and group therapy, family/parent work, and crisis intervention. Treatment covers depression, anxiety, trauma, bereavement, and family issues. The goal: helping children develop better social skills and relationships to improve classroom behavior so that all our students are actively engaged in learning.
At Rosalyn Yalow Charter School, we're not just teaching academics—we're building confidence, focus, and discipline through programs like fencing, chess, violin, and art. Every student receives chess, fencing and the arts, 3–4 days a week. Chess and fencing are ways for students to make new friends while also developing their critical thinking, problem-solving, and strategic skills, as crucial for college as academic skills.
Yalow shows our children worlds beyond the south Bronx. Saturday/Sunday chess and fencing competitions (against many kids from private schools across NYC), beginning in kindergarten/first grade, prove to our students that they can compete against those with privilege. In the process we are building our students’ self-esteem and encouraging deeper family engagement. At the New York State chess championships in Saratoga in March, 2025, 27 of Yalow’s kindergarten through 5th-grade students—7% of Yalow’s entire school body—competed. Our Tigers team took 1st place in the K-5 Under 1000 section and the K-5 Under 600 section! One student, Samuel Lin, took 1st place in that K-5 Under 1000 section.
Yalow’s goal through all these efforts is developing the whole child, encouraging each one of our students to excel.
