To begin my journey around nearly the entire island of Hokkaido, I took an 18-hour ferry ride and landed in Tomakomai. From there, the journey to explore Hokkaido in full began.

I made my way back to Sapporo from Otaru. Susukino, the largest entertainment district in Hokkaido—and one of the biggest in all of Japan—is a fun place to walk through. Since it was a Friday night, the area was bustling with people.

I was surprised to see quite a few people walking all the way from Sapporo Station to the Susukino area. It gave me the impression that people in Hokkaido are pretty used to walking long distances.

I also passed through Tanukikoji, a large covered shopping arcade in central Sapporo. It was crowded as well, with a noticeable number of foreign tourists adding to the lively atmosphere.
