Jalan Sultan is a historically significant street in Singapore, situated between Beach Road and Rochor Canal Road. It was developed in the early 19th century as part of Stamford Raffles’ 1822 Town Plan, which laid out Singapore’s first structured urban development.

In its early days, Jalan Sultan was a residential and commercial area that supported trading activities near the waterfront. Among the Chinese community, the street was known as “ji chap keng,” meaning “20 houses.” This name referred to the twenty houses that were initially constructed along this stretch of Beach Road near Jalan Sultan, highlighting the modest beginnings of the neighborhood.

Today, Jalan Sultan retains much of its historical charm while housing modern eateries, shops, and businesses, making it a place where Singapore’s past and present coexist.
