North Africa is home to some incredible Roman ruins and Dougga in Tunisia is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the world, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this video, I take you on a tour of this spectacular archaeological site, peacefully set among olive groves and rolling hills.
Why go all the way to Tunisia to see part of ancient Rome? Most Roman settlements in Europe have been modified, quarried, or built over, leaving little of their original structures intact. But Dougga, originally a Numidian and Carthaginian village, remained largely untouched after its abandonment, offering a rare glimpse into the past.
What You Will See in This Video:
The stunning second-century Roman Theater
The grand Capitolium, dedicated to Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva
The triumphal arch honoring Emperor Alexander Severus
Ancient baths, cisterns, and even public latrines!
The Numidian Mausoleum, a 21-meter-tall pre-Roman tomb
The grand Temple of Juno Caelestis and much more
A Brief History: Dougga’s roots go back to the Numidian Kingdom, later becoming part of the Roman Empire under Julius Caesar around 46 BCE. Over the centuries, it evolved into a thriving Roman city, blending Numidian and Roman influences before declining after the Byzantine and Vandal periods. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering a fascinating window into the past.
I have visited many Roman ruins, and Dougga stands out as one of the most beautifully preserved sites in the world. If you love ancient history, archaeology, or simply breathtaking landscapes, this is a must-visit destination for anyone who has an interest in Rome.
