Today on our 2012 Dodge Ram, we'll be installing the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System. Part number HM50002. Okay. Right now, we have our camera set in the hitch align mode. We're going to back up to a trailer, and we can judge the distance to the coupler on the trailer based upon our grid lines on the screen. Green means we're too far away. Yellow means we're getting close.
Red means we're about there. Once we see it in red, we'll stop and hook up to our trailer. Okay. When we're like that, we know we're good. We're ready to hook up to our coupler. Now, we'll demonstrate the camera when we're backing up and someone walks into our blind spot.
Now, the camera's, also, useful in helping us back into parking spots. We even get a nice audible warning when we start getting close to the curb. It's also handy in helping us maneuver into a tight parking spot. Now, one nice thing about the system we have is we can adjust the angle on our camera by sliding up on the lens and pushing down. If we want to have more view towards the ground to help line up towards our hitch or if we want to have more of a view behind us to see more of our surroundings when we're backing up, we can change that. It's the same with our park assist sensors as well.
We can change the angle on these as necessary by going up and down to the desired effect that we want. You want to make sure you have them high enough up, though, so they don't come down and are constantly on, because they're getting your bumper in the view. Now, the button on the side controls our volume setting for our mark assist. We can mute it, so when we're backing up to a trailer we don't have to listen to the beeping if we want. We can increase the volume all the way up. I'm going to mute it, right now.
When we press the button in on the side, we can change for our hitch approach, which judges distance for when we're hooking up to a trailer. We could go back to the normal backup camera, which is our everyday use mode. We can press it again to change the brightness on our screen. Press it again, we've got our contrast setting, our color setting, our sharpness, and then the reset that goes back to where it was before. Here's what our backup camera comes with. First, we have our backup camera assembly here, which has our camera and our park assist sensors that'll give us a proximity warning, an audible warning on our dash. We'll get the audible warning and our camera display through this included display hight here. It simply sticks on to our dash in a spot that we desire. Now, this is a very simple installation. We have our T-connect here, which goes between our factory 7-way wiring on our truck. It'll supply our backup camera with the power that it needs and in the ground. Now, this will automatically kick on through the 7-way when the vehicle shifted into reverse, because our 7-way does get a reverse signal input on it. All right. To begin our installation, we'll come to the back of our vehicle and remove our license plate. Your particular screws may vary at what type of head they have. Ours today have a 10mm. You could have a Phillip's or flathead screw as well. We'll take our camera assembly. Drop the cable behind the bumper. Take our license plate, slide it into our assembly. Line the holes up properly and use the included screws. Okay. Now, our factory 7-way that this taps into is located right here. If we head underneath the truck and look underneath the bumper, we'll find the plug at the back side of it. Here's the plug. On the top left side of it, there's a tab. If we push in on the tab, we can separate the connector. We need to push in on the tab with a screwdriver to help it release. Here's the tab you press on to release it. As you can see when you push down, it moves a lever, which unlocks it. Now, we'll take our T-connector here, plug it in to the vehicle end, and we'll push back until it snaps in place. Pull that and make sure it's secure. Okay. The other end will plug back on the 7-way in the back of the vehicle. Okay. I heard it click in. I'll pull back, make sure it's secure, and it is. All right. With that plugged in, we'll follow the red and black wires down, that come off of it, to this junction. There's a short connector here. The short connector is what plugs into our camera assembly. We'll just plug those in, lining up the arrows. Push it until it's secure. We'
