In October 2018 Rich and I made a day trip up to the State Line Road on the mountain ridge between western Montana and Idaho. It was quite the adventure since this was new territory unexplored by us. I had studied the digital maps of the area and found Forest Service roads that we could take the General David Lee on to make a loop to/from this high mountain trail. We had no idea what we were going to see or if we would be blocked by early season snows that usually fall in these higher elevations.

It was 9 a.m. when we parked at the I90 Two-mile exit close to St. Regis. We followed the Two-mile Creek Road (FS431) south to the junction of Coyle Creek Road (FS1180) and then onto Newman Ridge Road (FS1185). That placed us at the 6,400-foot Stateline Road (FS391) that straddles the ridge between western Montana and Idaho.

We preceded north-west following the 30-mile tree-lined and open road viewing incredible scenery looking west into the St. Joe National Forest of the Idaho panhandle. On the east side of the ridge was the Lolo National Forest of Montana and a few high mountain lakes such as Heart Lake and more fantastic scenery.

After exploring this route and talking to the only other humans we saw on the trail we found Dominion Creek Road (FS810) which led us back down the ridge into Montana. We stopped at the Milwaukee Railroad Dominion Creek Railroad trestle near the I90 Taft exit where Rich captured some awesome aerial footage.

We then jumped onto a 30-mile segment of the Route of the Olympian Trail, the abandoned Milwaukee Railroad bed that was mostly straight and level following I90 and the St. Regis River. We drove over the trestle at Saltese and under I90 a couple of times on our leisurely autumn afternoon ride back.

At the end of our 70-mile journey, we encountered two unknown narrow gates straddling the trail. These gates are designed to stop larger vehicles from entering the trail system. The General is 63” wide and we just barely squeezed through. I am glad we did since it would have been a second adventure retracing our 70-mile ride back to the pickup.

We arrived at our starting point around 4:30 p.m. This was one of the longest rides we have made in the General and also one of the most picturesque.

Cameras used in this production: Twin GoPro Hero-5 Cubes for outside views, a Mobius Dash-cam for interior shots, a Samsung Galaxy Cellphone, a Nikon Coolpix P610 for still images, and a DJI Phantom 3 for aerial shots.

Editing was accomplished with Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve Studio.
