X-rays used in X-ray CT (computed tomography) measurements are often polychromatic and have an energy distribution. Because X-ray absorption rate depends on the X-ray energy as well as the material density, polychromatic X-rays' energy distribution shifts as they go through an object. Higher-energy X-rays (harder X-rays) survive better than lower-energy X-rays (softer X-rays). As a result, X-rays energy shifts towards the higher side, or X-rays "harden" after going through an object. This phenomenon is called beam hardening.
