In this video documentary, I briefly explain the problems caused for the Maroons by the introduction of the surname phenomenon in 1963. And how a large number of Maroons had to live with misspelled surnames or even completely different surnames. This was because the civil service corps at that time was largely made up of people with inadequate education. Some had not even finished primary school, but were given government jobs because of their political affiliation. As a result, they misspelled the names of the Maroons when they registered them.

This video documentary is based on my 422-page book entitled "Okanisi Maroon onomastics, from Yaw to Kenrich from Abeni to Ruth. A study of the meaning, origin and distribution of Surinamese Okanisi Maroon (traditional) personal names". This book is the result of decades of research into the history of Okanisi Maroon traditional names and their possible African origins.

In deze videodocumentaire leg ik kort uit welke problemen er voor de Marrons ontstonden door de invoering van het fenomeen achternaam in 1963. En hoe een groot aantal Marrons moest leven met verkeerd gespelde achternamen of zelfs compleet andere achternamen. Dit kwam doordat het ambtenarenkorps in die tijd grotendeels bestond uit mensen met een gebrekkige opleiding. Sommigen hadden niet eens de lagere school afgemaakt, maar kregen een overheidsbaan vanwege hun partijpolitieke kleur. Het gevolg was dat ze de namen van de Marrons verkeerd spelden toen ze hen registreerden.

Deze videodocumentaire is gebaseerd op mijn 422 pagina's tellende boek getiteld “Okanisi Marron onomastiek, van Yaw tot Kenrich van Abeni tot Ruth. Een studie naar de betekenis, oorsprong en verspreiding van de Surinaamse Okanisi Marron (traditionele) persoonsnamen”. Dit boek is het resultaat van tientallen jaren onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van de traditionele namen van de Okanisi Marrons en hun mogelijke Afrikaanse oorsprong.
