The Moguri mod is very easy to install and offers upscaled backgrounds. Otherwise the PC Steam version of this gaming classic has the newly rendered characters very much clashing against the blurry backgrounds. It also makes several cheats available that can make the game easier for you. Trust me, this mod is almost a must! Here's the link that also should include a short tutorial, otherwise just search for one on YouTube.

By the way, under config in the game menu you can set the movement to always run - I found that useful. You can also choose between classic blue menu colors or gray color.
