Join us for a stunning late-May adventure on the Little Bald Hills Trail, a point-to-point hike that showcases the incredible ecological diversity of far Northern California.
We start by staging a car along Howland Hills Road in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, then drive the second vehicle to the trailhead off South Fork Road along the Smith River. From there, we set out on a roughly 9-mile hike, beginning in open, sun-lit terrain before traveling through Six Rivers National Forest and eventually entering Redwood National and State Parks.
Along the way, the trail passes through multiple vegetation zones and is bursting with spring wildflowers. One of the highlights of the hike is a rare and beautiful stand of pitcher plants—also known as cobra lilies—thriving in their unique serpentine wetland habitat. As we hike we get glimpses of the beautiful canyon of the South Fork of the Smith River.
As we descend, the landscape transforms dramatically, and we finish the hike beneath towering old-growth redwoods, ending near the Smith River back at Howland Hills Road.
If you love scenic hikes, botanical surprises, and the quiet magic of Northern California’s redwood country, this trail is an absolute gem.
