Officials said laboratory tests detected zinc phosphide — a dangerous toxic substance commonly used in rat poison — in samples taken from the bodies of the deceased. The victims were identified as Abdulla Dokadia, his wife Nasrin, and their daughters Aayesha and Zaineb, all of whom died while undergoing treatment at JJ Hospital.

According to investigators, the family had invited relatives to their home in Mumbai’s Pydhonie locality on the evening of April 25. After the guests left, the family allegedly ate cut watermelon late at night. Within a few hours, all four reportedly began suffering from severe vomiting and stomach-related complications. They were initially taken to a nearby medical facility before being transferred to JJ Hospital, where doctors were unable to save them.

During the investigation, police and forensic teams examined multiple food items collected from the residence. However, officials revealed that only the watermelon tested positive for zinc phosphide contamination. Authorities are now trying to determine how the poisonous substance entered the fruit and whether the incident was accidental or part of a planned act.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Pravin Mundhe stated that the investigation is still ongoing and more forensic and medical reports are being reviewed. Police have so far found no strong indication of suicide, while statements from relatives, neighbours, and others connected to the family are also being recorded by JJ Marg Police Station officials.
